During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” the metropolis, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an ambitious beginning to his term.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The young figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose grasp the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Ignoring suggestions to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will govern expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Socialist Convictions

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my convictions for fear of being called radical,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The inauguration was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan including:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion cost of these initiatives may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were revealed during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has attempted to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.

The Core Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing basic services: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and making sure smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
